Designed by James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel debuted in 1913 and remains one of the most iconic coins in American numismatics. The Type 1 design features the buffalo standing on a raised mound and was produced only during the first part of 1913 before the reverse was modified to the recessed-ground Type 2 design.
